Buddhist Lent

It is Buddhist Lent this month.... a MAJOR religious event in Thailand. Long weekend too. People are with family and friends, walking in and out of temples on weekend. Everyone celebrates it in a religious way - temples once again! hehe.

Tourists should take the opps to go to a major temple on the 18th... it is the day of the parade. We don't know which temple to recommend to be honest! Even small ones have a yearly parade, any major ones should have it too. It's around noon - 1pm. Maybe China town might have it.

Prior to the 18th... temples would have this event where people would come and offer HUGE candles and/or lightbulbs (that's why in retails like Tesco and Carrefour) are discounting heavily on these "yellow" stuffs. It's beliefed that offer light as offering = more light/brighter life :)

Trabajo manual

Hay trabajos que ya no se hacen. Cuando deja de funcionar un equipo electrónico se sustituye y cuando un zapato se raja también. Salvo en Chinatown, donde todavía pueden verse chinos soldando componentes, costureras remendando y zapateros poniendo "refuerzos". El abuelo nos contó que en su época ponían a los trajes cuchillas, un triangulo en la zona de mayor desgaste, normalmente la entrepierna. En los zapatos se ponían chapas en la puntera y en el tacón. Eran como herraduras metalicas para no desgastar la goma, pero que ayudaban a dar traspiés.

Chinatown

Hace muchos siglos que los chinos escogen Tailandia como lugar de emigración. En el siglo XVII el gobierno tailandes cambió al actual lugar y los chinos tuvieron que moverse al sur, creando la moderna Chinatown. Hoy allí se centraliza el comercio de productos que vienen del sur, la vivienda cuesta como en Londres, Hong Kong o Singapore y la concentración por metro cuadrado atrae a los turistas. Solo en las avenidas mas amplias el ancho es suficiente para una motocicleta. En la fotografía se ve un mototaxista al que se reconoce por llevar un chaleco naranja y que sube a su vespino al que pague unos céntimos por ser trasladado.
